Webinar: Communication Strategies for Non-Verbal Children
In July, the GUBA Foundation hosted an insightful webinar focused on “Communication Strategies for Non-Verbal Children,” tailored specifically for parents and caregivers of children with non-verbal communication needs. The session, held on July 12th was led by Nana Adwoa, an experienced Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO) with over 16 years of expertise in the field.
Nana Adwoa’s presentation provided practical strategies for parents and caregivers to support their children in receiving the best possible assistance from schools, local councils, and boroughs. Emphasizing a child-centered approach, she highlighted the importance of allowing children to progress at their own pace while being guided by professional support.
The one-hour webinar covered various forms of communication, both verbal and non-verbal. Nana Adwoa underscored that every form of communication is valuable, urging parents to embrace and encourage their child’s unique way of expressing themselves. “Your child is communicating in their own way, let them be individuals and support their communication, whatever form it takes,” she advised.
The session was highly interactive, with participants actively engaging and posing questions, creating a dynamic dialogue with the speaker. The webinar concluded with Nana Adwoa introducing the next event a workshop led by a certified Makaton trainer. This upcoming session will focus on teaching parents how to use Makaton signs to enhance communication with their non-verbal children.
The webinar also served as a platform for parents to share their experiences and challenges, particularly in accessing appropriate support and resources for their children. Many expressed a need for greater awareness of external agencies that can provide additional assistance tailored to their child’s needs.
