Autism Awareness: An Impactful Discussion on The King Obed Podcast

On August 15th, the GUBA Foundation team joined The King Obed Podcast, hosted by Obed Owusu Yeboah, to delve into our transformative flagship programme, “Autism: I Am Not a Stigma.” This insightful episode provided an opportunity to engage with a broader audience, with the goal of educating, informing and raising awareness about autism, particularly focusing on breaking down stigmas within ethnic minority communities.

Priya Skantharajah, GUBA Foundation’s Charity Manager, kicked off the conversation by reflecting on the organization’s ongoing efforts in promoting autism awareness since 2019. She shared the driving force behind the current project and discussed its vision for the future, emphasizing the importance of shifting perceptions and fostering inclusivity within underrepresented groups.

Nana Adwoa, the Special Needs Coordinator, offered a deeply personal perspective. As both a sibling to an autistic individual and a professional working with autistic children, she shared her experiences, shedding light on the challenges faced by families and caregivers. She highlighted the importance of accessible support systems and resources to better serve those impacted by autism.

Gertrude Asumadu, the Project Coordinator, brought another layer of personal connection, discussing her journey as a sibling to an autistic brother. She outlined the team’s progress since the project launched in February 2024, including collaborations with churches, professionals, and charities. Gertrude emphasized the significance of addressing autism awareness within the Black community and expressed her dedication to dismantling the stigmas surrounding it.

This engaging conversation not only raised awareness but also highlighted the power of community efforts in promoting understanding and acceptance of autism.
