Last Saturday, the GUBA Foundation embarked on an hashtag #AutismAwarenessWalk to raise awareness about autism at Victoria Park in London.
Joined by trustees and members (old and new), we walked approximately 6 km whilst raising awareness about our ‘Autism I am Not a Stigma’ project and championing diversity within our community especially within minority ethnic groups.
This was also an opportunity to reach a wider audience about autism and tackle the stigma that exists in black and ethnic minority groups. We were excited to have families attend with their autistic children which is a testament to inclusivity and embracing diversity in our society – which underscores the purpose of our ‘Autism I am Not a Stigma’ project.
One of the parents who attended said, “It was lovely to be part of such an awesome cause. Our community definitely has a lot to learn regarding neurodiversity in general and knowing that there are other families going through similar experiences is comforting because we are not alone and can support one another. I love that GUBA is actively promoting autism awareness and hope to be a part of the journey in the future”.
The walk ended with closing remarks by Irene Boham, GUBA Foundation trustee who thanked participants for attending and also encouraged them to continuously support the wider neurodivergent community and the GUBA Foundation’s ‘Autism I am Not a Stigma’ project to collectively destigmatize autism within our communities.
We are thankful to all those who joined us and we look forward to continuously empowering communities through our upcoming initiatives towards destigmatising autism.
