Embracing Autism: Breaking Stereotypes and Building Inclusive Faith Communities

On 1st December 2024, the GUBA Foundation, in collaboration with the National Lottery Community Fund and IPC London, hosted a powerful and thought-provoking event, “Embracing Autism: Breaking Down Stereotypes and Building Inclusive Faith Communities”, at the International Praise Centre in London.

The event brought together a congregation of 100 families, educators, faith leaders and advocates to discuss the importance of fostering inclusivity for individuals with autism, particularly within faith-based communities. Here are the key highlights and outcomes of the session:

  • Awareness and Education
Lady Dentaa Amoateng (Founder of GUBA Foundation), Nana Adwoa ( SENCO) & Suezanne & Vida (Co-Founders of BrightStars Autistic Club) shed light on the challenges faced by individuals with autism, particularly within African and Asian communities, where cultural and religious stigmas can create barriers. Through real-life examples, they emphasized the importance of education in dismantling stereotypes and promoting understanding.
  • The event highlighted the role of faith leaders in shaping inclusive spaces. Discussions revolved around how communities can work together to ensure that individuals with autism feel welcomed, respected, and supported within their faith practices.
  • Practical Strategies
Attendees were provided with practical tools and strategies to create autism-friendly environments in their places of worship, schools, and homes. This included tips on sensory considerations, communication adjustments, and fostering patience and empathy.
  • Parent Empowerment
The session empowered parents with resources to advocate for their children while also addressing the emotional challenges they may face. The importance of finding and building support networks was a recurring theme.

The GUBA Foundation remains committed to creating spaces for dialogue and action. We will continue working with families, community groups and workship places to ensure that individuals with autism are supported, celebrated, and included in every facet of life.

Thank you to everyone who attended, together, we are breaking barriers and building a brighter, more inclusive future.
